Yes you will need proof of insurance before they will let you have the car.

If you finance the car, you have to have full-coverage before they even let you drive off the lot with it, even if you have to get it while you are in the dealership you can. If you buy it outright then the minimum is just liability.

Get everything lined up before you walk into the dealer. Everything. Pre-approved loan. Insurance. It is too easy for the dealer to take advantage of you at the lot.

You will need car insurance before you leave the lot. My advice would be to get the car loan first, then go looking for a car.Once you find the car, you can then shop for insurance.
One benefit of this is that you will see the total amount that the car will cost you before you actually sign on the dotted line.
Please take into consideration the coverage when buying insurance, not just the price. The state minimums will probably not be enough to cover you should you have an accident, so even if you pay a few dollars more per month, you should make sure your liability limits are sufficient. Hope this helps!
