howdydog asked:
I am 20, female, in college, decent grades, this will be my first car, i will be driving a relatively cheap car. 199? Honda civic/accord…something along those lines. I live in a very small town. I will only be driving about 10 minutes a day commuting to work and school.
i wont be added to my parents policy, i will have my own.
I tried doing a free quote thing, but i guess my town is too small, it didn’t recognize my address! but from people who actually pay car insurance and know a think or two about it, i am curious as to how much i should expect it to be!

It really does depend on the size of the engine in the car. I think a standard civic’s engine is a 1.4 (1400cc ish) so, because of your age and your sex around £400 to £800 I would say?

You should be able to find liability for $50 a month or less. My wife is 20 about to be 21 and she pays $100 a month for full coverage on her 2001 honda odyssey and $80 a month for full coverage on my 2000 honda accord. How much you pay is based on a ton of factors, age, sex, tickets, what kind of coverage you want, where you live, married or single, insurance companies look at all of these things plus more. Your best bet is to open the phone book and call several to see the best deal. Some companies my wife called were double of the company she went with.

How much COVERAGE will you be buying on the car? It could be anywhere from $800 a year to $5,000 a year, or even more – as you left off a WHOLE bunch of vital information.

If you are in the US, there are MANY factors that play a role into what premium you wind up paying. There are no FLAT quotes, every policy is different for each individual and their situation.
Also, your rate depends on what coverages your are interested in purchasing. Example: 1999 Honda Accord, can probably get away with Liabilily (BIPD), Uninsured Motorist ( I never reccomend against purchasing that coverage) and I would include at least $1000 medical, if not $5000 or $10,000. Also, to help you get a lower rate(if you are still listed on your parents policy) get a copy of their policy declarations page showing you as an insured operator for at least 6 months to a year. That will help keep you out of a non-standard (higher premium) market. Also, most companies(that I know of) will not allow a named insured (policyholder) to carry a good student discount, just the operators.
One last thing to add, the higher the liability limit you carry versus the state minimum, in the future when shopping for insurance gives you another discount that most people who “only get what the state requires” miss out on in the long run. FYI.
I would call around to your local agents and have them quote you the same limits and coverages and then compare the quotes you receive. In NM, for someone in your situation I would think that you would not be paying less than $100/month to $150/month for those coverages. But, that is NM and NM has high insurance rates.

It depends on many factors. If it’s liability only or fully comp also makes a big difference.
So, between $150 and $350 a month? It’ll go down when you reach 25.
Also, prices wildly differ depending who you go with, hence there are many comparison sites where you input your details to get quotes (prices) from a number of different insurers. Getting quoted is free so it’s worth shopping around before you settle with an insurer.
Here’s some comparison places I use:
