so basically..my dad has offered to pay for my car insurance, by insuring my car himself and putting me as an additional driver but i dont live with him. we got a good quote with directline but is this allowed? i really can’t afford to pay for 1500 a year and neither can my dad where as its 480 a year if he has me as an additional driver. can anyone help please? thank you
he is paying this for my 21st birthday as he didnt want know what to get me as a present..i am single mum so it would really help me which is why he has offered to pay it. i havent asked him to pay it.

If your dad wants to pay your insurance premiums that’s his prerogative. Can he pay mine?

It may not be “alright” but people do it, And it really doesnt matter.
Im still insured as an additional driver on my own car just because its a sports car and im 22. Insurance companys like to overcharge so get back at them ;\
I’ve never had any problems.

I don’t know how old you are but, it is kind of not fair to ask Dad to pay for insurance and not live there. I am willing to bet that your Dad would respect you a whole lot more if you managed your money and paid for the insurance yourself. Also, you would be pretty proud of yourself for the accomplishment.
Hope this helps.

The premium payer can be anyone but its best to inform the insurance company where the car will be (its location and if its in an enclosed garage or not)..

Hi,
If you allow your dad to insure your car with you on the policy if you as a named driver even though it is your car and you will be driving the vehicle most of the time then this is a fronted risk. If you then have an accident and the insurance company get wind of the fact that you were the main user they will not pay out for the claim and possibly pursue you for fraud. My insurance is over £1000 and i’m 22 so I understand that insurance isn’t always fair but its a necessary evil.

so basically, no. What Dad is proposing is illegal and will not work. He can pay for a policy in your name but he cannot list you as living in his household if you do not live in his household… That is basically… so …
just basically
